After a long lapse of time, there are throngs of people
worshipping at Jaffna’s illustrious temple, the Nallur
Kandasamy Kovil; at the famous Nallur festival, which is
currently in progress and will end on 19th August.
This annual historic event is being celebrated with
much ceremony with many pious Hindu devotees both from the
south and overseas flocking to Jaffna to participate in this
event of great religious significance.

The world’s largest general use car rental company,
which has its presence in approximately 8,000 locations in 145
countries, partnered with Sri Lankan Airlines and the
Flysmiles programme last week, with Flysmiles members getting
special concessions.

The Sri Lankan Air Force planes are now busy with a new
service – providing a 45 minute flight to the Palali Airbase
in the northern peninsula with flights taking off from the
Ratmalana Air Force base in Colombo on Monday, Wednesday and
Friday every week in a Y 12 air craft.
Plans are also underway for Heli Tours, the commercial
branch of the Sri Lanka Air Force, to operate a charter flight
service; a once-a-week flight to the tourist town of Sigiriya
in Central Sri Lanka.

Five young journalists representing ‘The Little Master’
a news paper published in Shanghai, China, were hosted to a
tour of Sri Lanka from 1st to 8th August by the Sri Lanka
Tourism Promotion Bureau, on an initiative of the Consulate of
Sri Lanka in Shanghai. The youngsters were privileged to meet
with President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the President’s house in
Kandy.
Published by an award winning and
recognized media house in Shanghai, ‘The Little Masters’ is
China’s first weekly newspaper handled solely by
children below 15 years of age, complete with interviews,
writings, illustrations, photographs and the editorial.

The Carlton International 7’s ( Asian International
Rugby Sevens Tournament ) will be held in Sri Lanka from
November 27th to 29th 2009, with the Asian Rugby
Football Union (ARFU) and the International Rugby Board (IRB)
having recognized the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU)
to conduct the event.
The tournament will be known as the Carlton Sri
Lanka Seven’s tournament, and the ‘Tharunyata Hetak’
movement will join the SLRFU in organizing the series.

The Asian Rugby Football Union has a membership of 26
countries and top national sides are expected to announce
their participation at this event.

One of Colombo’s most dazzling events, FACETS Sri Lanka
will run its 19th exhibition from 3rd to 6th September 2009,
at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference
Hall.
This exhibition will see both local and foreign
exhibitors showcasing fabulous items of jewelry and
precious and semi precious gemstones of a large variety.
Organized by the Gem and Jewelry association under the
sponsorship of the National Gem and Jewelry Authority and the
Sri Lanka Export Development Board, this year too, as at
previous events, exhibitors from overseas will also
participate.
FACETS Sri Lanka 2009 will see over 30 exhibitors from
India, Thailand and Hong Kong displaying the grandeur of
jewelry alongside host country Sri Lanka’s exhibits.

An evening of dance theatre, presented by the students
of the Chitrasena Vajira Dance Foundation, “Kumbi
Kathawa” is an encore performance of its premier show
which took the stage in 2007.
A story of courage, compassion,
forgiveness and rebuilding, told through dance, will unfold at
the Bishop’s College auditorium from 28th August to 30th
August.
