About Kandy >>
Sri Lanka’ s fascinating variety in climate and landscape,
and rich cultural heritage has for many centuries attracted

Nowhere is this rich diversity more evident than in Kandy,
the charming hill capital and the cultural city, 129 km. from
Colombo and situated 465 metres above sea level. The Colonial
rulers called it Kandy for Kanda in Sinhala, meaning in hill.
The capital of the Kandyan Kingdom in the 16th century and
the seat of much of Sri Lanka’s culture, this Royal City
fell into the hands of the British when the last Kandyan King,
Sri Vikrama Rajasinha was captured by them in 1815. The city
was born in the 14th century and became the capital of the
Kandyan Kingdom in the 16th century.
Nestling midst low hills, and looped by sri Lanka’s
largest river, the Mahaweli, Kandy is still the home of the
arts and crafts, music, dance and song which flourished during
the reign of the king their patron.
This beautiful city, with its hills and valleys, rivers,
lakes and cascading waterfalls around the hills, has its share
of hallowed and living shrines, of the Buddhists, Hindus,
Christians and the Muslims in the city and around. But, to
the Buddhist, Kandy is a Sacred City.

Kandy is the famous city of Sinhalese history, culture, religion
and pageantry. The Kandyan Kingdom, the last independent
state in Sri Lanka withstood the onslaught of three invading
European nations for over two centuries. The islanders
looked upon the King of Kandy as their King and Kandy
as the last bastion of independent Buddhist thought, which
gave spiritual strength and virtue to the Kandyan people.
Kandy can be explored on foot, with the higher altitude
making the climate conducive to long walks. The city is
visually rich with its narrow streets lined with old buildings
and crowded with people. The Municipal Market has superb
displays of fruit and vegetables, textiles and clothing
and the man-made lake provides an attractive focal point.

Amaya Hills
Fine details borrowed from the temples and historic architecture of Kandy . Traditional sun and moon motifs. Furnishing in deep red and black with tinges of gold - colours that evoke the murals of the kingdom’s earlier centuries. A private balcony with valley or mountain views.
Regal details. Each of the four Suites is named for previous governors of Kandy and features an antique noble costume encased in glass.
Woodcarvings portray local religious imagery - a dancing Shiva, Kinduriya - celestial musicians, traditional dancers. The Suites allow guests to be surrounded with the local culture. Perfect comfort and Kandyan elegance.
The Suites wing (Uththara Prasada) can be reached from the lobby or from the pool area via a stone staircase lined with natural boulders.
